Some students experience difficulties in school, ranging from problems with concentration, learning, language, and perception to problems with behavior and/or peer relationships. Special education is designed to ensure that students with such exceptional needs are provided with special instructions and materials.
Special education can include a range of support services, depending on the needs of the student. Support services may involve physical assistance and therapy, counseling and psychotherapy, modified learning environments and assistive learning devices, educational and psychological assessments, and behavioral modification techniques.
In order to qualify for special education a student must be diagnosed as having a disability and the disability must be found to have an impairment that interferes with learning so as to require special services.
Being diagnosed of having a disability does not mean that a student isn't smart or can't learn. It simply means that he or she needs special instruction or extra help in certain areas.
